Our private throwing lessons are excellent for those who really want to get a handle on their throwing skills and knowledge, whether they are a beginner or need a remedial lesson.
Our private lesson instructor, who has more than 6 years of throwing and coaching experience, will take you step by step through the form and art of throwing. The instructor will remain with you for your entire two-hour session to ensure a seamless learning experience with any of the three throwing weapons you may choose for your lesson. No matter your selected weapon, our teaching method is designed and influenced by our years of competitive and occupational knowledge to be a foundational style and is perfect for beginners!
Our private lessons cost $150 per person and are two hours in length. If you would like to have a private lesson with a friend or that special someone, the cost per thrower will drop to $120 per person for the two-hour long session. We will not instruct groups larger than two people, so we do not compromise your lesson’s focus and instruction.
Tomahawk Throwing
The private tomahawk lesson consists of a streamlined introduction into the history, types, and modern day of application of tomahawk or “hawk” throwing. From there you will be introduced to several types of hawks to try out and get familiar with. The bulk of the lesson will consist of throwing three hawks into a target at 13 feet. This will enable you and your teacher to really hone your form and aim. If you prove your ability, you may be instructed on how to throw from 2 or 1.5 rotations, however this is entirely at the discretion of our private lesson instructor.
Knife Throwing

What is axe throwing?
Believe it or not, axe throwing has been around for a while now and is quite safe. It typically involves throwing an axe at a wood target. The goal is to embed the axe as close to the bullseye as possible.
How does it work?
It’s actually pretty easy to master and involves an axe rotating once fully in the air before hitting its target. Once an overview on proper safety is given, your coach will help you with proper hand/grip placement, throwing motion, and standing distance. Once the basics are demonstrated and acknowledged, you are free to throw.
What makes The Virginia Axe Co. different than other axe throwing establishments?
It’s all in our mission: To provide an exciting new adventure, cause no unnecessary waste in our process, inspire new bladed sports participants through a sharing of our competitive knowledge, experience and passion.
The Virginia Axe Co. is a locally owned, multi-family run facility. We are committed to using regionally repurposed timber cut targets from naturally or already downed trees. Though we may offer different types of target builds, any materials we use are recycled responsibly.
We bring years of real experience to these sports. We didn’t just jump into a new fad and take it corporate. We’ve been competing nationally in the bladed sports arena for years. We are proud to bring our years of award-winning competitive knife and axe throwing experience to the Richmond area community.
Is axe throwing safe?
Safety is our number one priority! Our coaches will provide orientation prior to your event, and they will stay with you the whole time, ensuring that everyone is complying with safe throwing technique. We have constructed the throwing lanes with safety zones.
How old do you have to be?
12 years or older. Children under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.
Can you accomodate people with disabilities?
Yes! We have made sure our facility is fully ADA compliant. Axe throwing is available for a wide range of people with a variety of abilities!
Do you offer food and beverage?
We offer light snacks (chips, pretzels) and microwaveable items (like Hot Pockets, mini-pizzas), and non-alcoholic drinks (water, soda, coffee). Please feel free to bring your own food if you’d prefer. We do not serve alcohol, but you may BYOB after applying for a banquet license through the ABC website. Please let us know if you need assistance with catering options.
Is there parking at your venue?
Yes, we do have parking available. Please call ahead to coordinate parking arrangements for larger groups.
Are there footwear requirements?
The only requirement for anyone throwing is closed-toe shoes. Comfortable clothing that allows for full range of motion in your arms is recommended.
